Artist Statement:
Michael Verdon is a Transformative Artist. His artwork invites reflection, play, research, and discovery from all. His work is experience focused and often aesthetically interesting to a broad range of people. The work he makes often changes over time and with participation from citizens.
Michael works in large scale design and imbues every choice with meaning. He uses captivating forms to guide the viewer into a participant. He works primarily in wood, steel, and glass, but uses all mediums to create the richest story possible. He has experience in metal and plastic casting, welding, clay, ancient joinery, color, motion sensors and programming, light, sound, video, and more to bring each installation to life. He loves to experiment with new materials as well.
He desires citizens to engage deeper. To look. To discover. By creating this opportunity, Michael's work connects directly to those present and allows for a new perspective. He breaks down barriers with discovery and action to share concepts in each unique installation.
Michael has specialized in memorials for over 10 years, often building large scale work dedicated to community, healing, and transformation. He desires to continue this practice and push it further. He started creating living structures wrapped in flowering plants to create a vertical pollinator garden that annually renews itself. Michael is driven to create site specific installations with mass appeal, meaning, and interactivity.
Michael also does commission work. Each object is informed by the client and final location.
Michael graduated from George Mason University in 2015 with a with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art (BFA) and minors in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and Social Justice. His studio is located in Washington. DC.
